Managing Display Library Directories

Only users with the Content or Site Administrator roles can add or edit directories and sub-directories in the Display Libraries.

You can manage the directories of the following Display Libraries:

• Templates
• Scripts
• Content Definitions
• Styles

Content Manager provides a default directory tree structure in which you store and organize your display library contents. The default structure includes:

• The directory tree root, named after the library type (Style Library, Page Template Library, Content Definition Library, Script Library)
• A single sub-directory below the root named Unassigned, in which Content Manager stores files from deleted directories

You manage the directories of the Display Libraries (Styles, Page Templates, Content Definitions, and Scripts) by:

• Adding subdirectories
• Renaming a directory
• Deleting a directory

Adding a Directory or Subdirectory

You can add a directory under the library root directory or its subdirectories.

To add a directory, follow these steps:

1. Highlight the library root directory name and click the Plus (Add Node) icon at the top of the pane to add the directory.
2. A New Node appears in the directory tree:
3. Enter a name for the new directory and press Enter on your keyboard.
4. The pane on the right will be blank. Click Add New to upload an asset or create new content.

 

Renaming a Directory

Only content directories can be renamed.

To rename a directory:

1. Click to highlight the directory and select the pencil (Edit Node) button at the top of the pane.
2. The directory (menu or folder) name becomes editable:
3. Edit the directory name and press Enter on your keyboard.

 

Deleting a Directory

When you delete a directory in an Display Library, Content Manager moves any files in that directory to the unassigned directory for that Library.

To delete a directory:

1. Click the directory and select the Delete icon.
2. A dialog appears prompting you to confirm that you want to delete this directory:
3. Click OK.
4. Content Manager deletes the directory and moves any files in that directory to the unassigned directory for that Library.

Note: This behavior differs slightly from Menus & Pages, where you cannot delete a directory node (menu) if it has pages associated with it. You must first move or delete those pages before you will be allowed to delete the menu node.

Organizing Folders

Typically developers may also be involved in setting up Content, Image and File Libraries for the site. Keep these tips in mind.

• The Content library should mirror menus and pages.  Usually, the file library and images will also mirror menus and pages.
• Add content placement and organization to author training.

• Where possible, define standard naming conventions for folders and files.

• Avoid special characters for folder and file names when possible.  They are not well supported in URLs.

• Avoid creating one large folder, and have a limit of 1000 - 5000 items in a folder. Higher numbers than this can slow the admin UI.
