iAPPS eCommerce Building Blocks

All eCommerce systems are composed of elements that are unique to selling products via an online store. This section describes the basic building blocks of eCommerce and explains how they relate to one another.

Understanding eCommerce building blocks is critical in order to effectively use the iAPPS Commerce administrative user interface. Each of these are detailed in additional sections.

Building Block

Description

Commerce Site

The top-level of your eCommerce website. A site can be configured to support one or more stores (for example, www.Amazon.com).

Store

The location within the site where a visitor can go to purchase products from one or more Product Catalogs. A store can be configured to inherit the site domain name or have its own domain name (for example, www.amazon.com and www.amazon.co.uk).

Catalog

A container for products that are organized by category and sub-category (for example, www.amazon.com/books). There an only be one catalog per site, but more than one site can share a catalog.

Category

A category is a grouping of similar products, which usually share numerous properties and Attributes. Some categories are purely organizational, that is, they do not contain products but rather provide navigational aids for finding products further down the hierarchy (for example, www.amazon.com/books/fiction/historical).

Navigation

The structural design applied to the Product Catalog within an eCommerce site. Filter criteria and Facets are applied to restrict the number of products displayed and aid the shopper to further narrow their product search. Products are grouped in navigational categories (for example, Audio would be a category for a MP3 player).

Filter

Sorting criteria built into navigation methods so that product choices presented to the customer are narrowed. Product Catalogs might contain thousands of products, so filters use Attributes to limit the number of choices presented to a customer. For example, a Product List page will show only LCD TVs if the Filter criteria are TV and LCD.

Facet

A navigational element for the attributes defined at the product level, which enables shoppers to further narrow their product search. This type of search is known as a Faceted search. For example, a Faceted search could include selecting price, brand, size, color, and depth within the list of Product Attributes presented on a Product List page.

Product

A manufactured or service (such as downloads) made available for purchase within the online store. Within the iAPPS Commerce Product Catalog it is defined by Attributes.

Product Listing

A collection of products within the same category that appear on the Product List page.

Product Type

A high-level set of products, for example, Televisions and Audio, that share similar Attributes such as brand, size or color.

Attributes

Elements used to describe the features of a Product Type. For example, as an Attribute the color red could be applied to the Product Type shirt or bicycle.

SKU (Stock Keeping Unit)

A unique collection of numbers – generally six or more– that represent a product specification. It is used to facilitate the maintenance of store inventory.
