Managing Content Definition Items in Site Editor

Content Definitions are content items that use a template for ensuring the content is formatted correctly and consistently across many pages.

Content Definitions are used to control how content appears. The formatting, spacing and other style issues are pre-set as part of the definition. They are used for text that is often repeated in a site, such as a “Related Items” section or press releases which may need to have certain pieces of information (such as a contact name or a release date) appear in a set order or type of display. Display characteristics for the XML content are stored as XSLT in the Content Definitions Library. Content Definitions often still have Rich Text Areas contained within them.

Behavior of Content Definitions in Variant Sites

Most Content Definitions are created especially for each site. Content Definitions can be shared across variant sites, but will have some slightly different behaviors. This depends on whether the Content Definition was created and uploaded in the Master Site or a variant site.

Content Definition Tasks

While you are creating or editing rich text you may want to use Code Snippets, images, links, Sharepoint assets or video.
